| This collection is based on the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world". Instead of traditional wood block prints, however, these images are made of numerous layers of stiff paper. By layering the folds in the samurai's komono, the ornaments in the courtesans' hair and the waving fins of the coi, these images literally float off the page. Each piece was done in ink and guache, and the komono patterns are handcarved linolium block prints. 1998-2000 |
